The Christmas Quiz Doorhandles
We know you have been busy during the past Christmas holidays, because we received a truckload of answers to our six-part Quiz. And 24 of you had all answers correct! For the full list see ‘Read More’. But first the explanation:
Day 1: Cadillac. We thought this one was easy. All you had to do was enter the word “admiral” in the search box on the top of the PreWarCar homepage and then the first hit would have been this 1941 Cadillac. Never used our search box before? Try it, and you’ll find a wealth of pre-war information at your fingertips.
Day 2: Austin. The Wolseley sheep shearing machines were made in Australia and when Wolseley wanted to set up a British branch in Birmingham, he employed Herbert Austin as works manager. In December 1905 Austin founded the motor manufacturing company that bore his name. The doorhandles belonged to a 1938 Austin Big Seven.
Day 3: Steyr. The easiest thing to do was to google the name of Karl Jenschke and in return you would have been rewarded with the name “Steyr”. What we showed you was the 1938 Steyr Type 55.
Day 4: Willys-Knight. A bit cryptic this one, as the salesman who sold over land was John North Willys. In 1908 Willys became president of the Overland Automobile Company. In 1912 he bought the Edwards Motor company and also secured the rights for the Knight engine. In 1914 he formed Willys-Knight. The General Purpose car is of course the Jeep. Our photo shows a 1928 70A.
Day 5: Vauxhall. On day five of the quiz we showed you the doorhandle of a 1924 Vauxhall OE 30-98, which was the successor to the famous Vauxhall Prince Henry.
Day 6: Citroen. Not many failed to recognize the famous Citroën 2CV. What we showed you was not a prototype, but one of the 250 built in August/September 1939 for exhibition at the Paris Motor show of that year, but which for obvious reasons never took place. Only four of these production models still exist.
We threw all answers in the proverbial hat and the names of first six that we took out again will be rewarded with the PreWarCar poloshirt. They are: Bart Oosterling; Dermot Johnson; Gigio Isola; Jeff Hansen; Jonathan Baker and Roger Fields. From the remaining correct answers we took out the name of Vladimir Perkic and decided to reward him with the PreWarCar Calendar. Congratulations to all! See you next Saturday again with a ‘normal’ quiz.

An appreciation for all things of beauty
When Seth Atwood, the founder of the Atwood Vacuum Machine Company, became annoyed by rattling doors on his car he invented an adjustable door bumper. It was a good solution and not much later he found himself supplying them to much of the motor industry. He often visited his customers accompanied by his daughter, Barbara Mae Atwood. On one of these visits Barbara was struck by seeing the family name on the door hinge of a car and so began her interest in automobiles. She graduated from Stanford University but as she was also a stylish woman, she had a brief career as fashion model (click main pic!). During the early 1980s she started collecting automobiles. She had a wide interest in cars and her collection ranged from this unusual 1913 Herreshoff Runabout to the smart 1936 Cord 810 Convertible Coupe. Last year Barbara Atwood died at age 88 and now her automobiles will be offered by RM during their Arizona Auction on Friday, January 16. (photos courtesy RM-auctions)
The Swiss Model Mystery (UPDATE: Sunbeam?)
In 1914 the Swiss capital Bern hosted the National Exhibition, a trade fair to show the national products and industries of Switzerland. There were several themes like agriculture, mining and trades. In the engineering section an inventor from the South of Switzerland, Mr. Luigi (Luisin) Piffaretti, showed a car model that had been completely handcrafted by him. It had working back wheels, which could be operated by winding up a little motor (operated by a key like many classic children toys) which worked with a clock spring. The model still exists today in perfect condition and is the property of a classic car restoration specialist in Switzerland. The model bears no inscriptions or badges, so it is difficult to identify (click for better look). Is there someone who can tell us which car or body inspired the inventor? Contact us! (With thanks to Carlo Azzi from Lugano, Switzerland)

Update by Peter Ransom: "The modeler/engineer has made a few mistakes. The rear mudguards have peculiar proportions and are mounted too low - there's almost no allowance for spring travel. The steering column is too long and the wheel is positioned in such a way that it would just about compress the driver's chest. While I can see similarities to the 1914 12-16 H.P. Sporting Model Sunbeam, I can also see features that tell me it's not a Sunbeam. The type and location of the running board supports and the hanger for the lower rear spring must be a giveaway for another make. The rear doors are of the suicide variety with sliding handles on top of the door frame - this must be a clue for someone! Although the photo is blurred, it appears that there's a radiator that extends beyond the front axle. I look forward to knowing the truth of the matter!"
32 degrees Celsius (90 F) on New Year's day !
Thanks to Barry & Coral Stalker who sent their best New Year's wishes from steaming hot Queensland, Australia. Unfortunately the photo of their fine Diatto melted on the way to our offices. No sweat, lots of other cool pictures came in. Reverend Ian Murray from Scotland has to scrape snow and ice form his car like everybody else. However in his case the windshield is rather modest as you check at his Bugatti Brescia. For a drive out in the winter Highlands a friends Hotchkiss seems to offer slightly better comfort. Mike West from the US is most enthusiast about the winter performance of his Hupmobile sedan. But their is no doubt who had most fun within 15 feet: Tobias Kasimirowicz! .
Somewhat more mileage was added by Malcolm Jeal with his 1912 FN '1600 Model' "....on New Year's Day 2009. It is stopped on a Roman Road that runs across the top of the Downs on the Wiltshire-Hampshire border in southern England. There was no snow, but the freezing fog had left the fields, hedges and trees encrusted with ice. Despite the zero temperature the car ran to perfection throughout the 50-mile round-trip that we did to have lunch with other old-car enthusiasts in a charming country inn. They came in newer cars: Vintage Lagondas, Austin Sevens, a bigger six-cylinder Austin, and a 1930 Morris Minor; but one person had brought his little 1901 Georges Richard to the gathering on a trailer and gave anyone who wanted to a ride on it around the village green. We may be a bit mad, but it was fun, and a good prelude to early car motoring during 2009!"
